Born into a military family, Sonya and her twin brother Daniel were brought up to the belief that family, like any team, stood by eachother. When moving from army base to army base, Sonya found it less painful  to remain close to her family than bother making new friends. She even grew to enjoy the traveling and growing up around the army, finding the life exciting and believing that by joining the army, not only would she be following in her father's footsteps, but that she'd also be doing her job to help her country.

 

This reality soon cracked when, at eighteen, Sonya's brother, just soon after joining the local police force, was killed in action. His death cemented Sonya's decision to join the army, pushing herself to excel in everything the training regiment threw at her.  When she became enlisted as an officer in the Army, her discipline, drive and the respect of her commanding officers earned her a spot as one of the very few women accepted to train under the US Special Forces. 

Sonya's career in Special Forces created in her a fierceness and underlying brutality  that was matched only by the loyalty and comradeship she felt for the men that shared her unit.  When she'd reached the rank of lieutenant, a blotched mission led to the death of several soldiers, including Sonya’s fiance, by the overlord of the Black Dragon Clan, Kano.  The year long chase led Sonya and her team to a harbor in Hong Kong, China, and to the ship that would take them to a martial arts tournament called Mortal Kombat, led by Shang Tsung. Once on land, her small unit wa ambushed by Tsung's guards and held in the palace dungeon, while Tsung bargained Sonya with their lives in order that she would participate in the tournament.

The tournament was in actuality a death trap, with those who lost a bout usually loosing not only their lives but also had their soul stolen by the tournament master, Shang Tsung. The tournament lasted for days on end, until Sonya finally had a match against Kano . It ended in a draw, and she was forced to watch as her unit was killed in front of her. With Shang Tsung's defeat, the island collapsed in of itself and Sonya along with Kano found themselves in a forest in the realm of Outworld where they were soon captured and brought before the Emperor Shao Kahn, where they would be used as bait for the Earth warriors in a rematch tournament held in Outworld. During her imprisonment, she was chained alongside Kano and forced to only stand and watch her new friends fight for their lives.
